Features and Capabilities of eMarking Assistant
eMarking Assistant (also called eGrading Assistant) has been designed by teachers
to help teachers by saving them time
providing detailed feedback and effective feedback to on student assessment.

eMarking Assistant:
- is available as a 30 day fully functional trail which can be easily
installed (3 clicks and under 1 minute) and uninstalled without
administration privileges or firewall modification
- can be installed on 2 computers allowing you to save time grading papers both
at work and at home
- integrates into Word for Windows and operates in exactly the same way in
all versions so you don't need to learn a new system
- provides a floating toolbar which can be moved around the screen or
displayed vertically or horizontally to suit your work habits and screen
size
- provides text tips so you don't have to remember cryptic icons
Reusable feedback comments:
- are displayed on the floating "eMarking Assistant" toolbar showing both the name
and the text of the comment (so you don’t have to remember codes)
- are organised in categories, e.g. "academic writing" or "APA" or
"structure", and can be selected by clicking, using the arrow keys or typing
the first few letters
- can be inserted into either a comment bubble in the margin or into the
both of the text (or onto a marking sheet you are grading a physical paper)
- can be created by selecting text, images, audio or tables and clicking
the "reuse it" button
Audio assessment feedback:
- can be easily recorded in Word and inserted into the assignment and even stored for
future reuse
- can be compressed for smaller file size (embedded MP3 is approximately 200
KB per minute)
- is embedded
in the assignment so you don't need
to return separate audio files
The "setup" tab provides access to the following Word features:
- show or hide spelling or grammar errors or paragraph marks and invisible
characters
- record or don't record track changes or revision marks
- show either the "final", the "final with mark-up" or the "original"
version of the document
Automated marking rubrics and "eRubrics" tab:
- can be easily created in a Word table with columns for assessment criteria and
standards, the maximum mark, the mark or grade, and additional columns (e.g.
self or peer assessment)
- respond to button clicks or function keys by highlighting standards and adjusting,
recording, adding, and rescaling marks
- will insert the selected standard and mark into the assignment as a
margin comment
You can select a phrase in the assignment and then click buttons to:
- save it as a reusable comment and add it to the comment bank
- do a Google web, Scholar, blog or groups search and display the results
in your browser
- highlight every occurrence of the phrase (this is helpful if the student
has overused or misused a phrase)
eMarking Assistant integrates into Microsoft Word for Windows so you:
- don't have to learn another software package
- can use other Word features such as autotext, quickparts, revision
marks, track changes, autocorrect, spell checker, grammar checker
- can use the same tools in any version of Microsoft Word (2000, 2002, 2003 or 2007)
for Windows
Reusable comment banks can be:
- created in a Word table and then imported or created directly in eMarking
Assistant by highlighting text then clicking the "reuse it" button
- saved in a word file to edit, or move to another computer or distribute
to markers
- "harvested" from a folder of previously marked assignments
- swapped with other eMarking Assistant users in the support site at the
eMarking Assistant support community
A 70 item "academic writing and APA referencing" comment bank
is supplied with eMarking Assistant and additional comment banks are available
in the eMarking Assistant support community.
